What is dynamic discounting?

Dynamic discounting is a supply chain finance technique where a buyer pays a supplier's invoice before the agreed due date in exchange for a proportional reduction in the invoice amount. The discount is “dynamic” because it varies based on how many days early the payment is made — the earlier the payment, the higher the discount offered.

What Is Dynamic Discounting? (A Plain-English Guide)

If you run the finance function at a mid-market company, you have probably heard the term “dynamic discounting” and wondered whether it is worth looking into. This guide explains exactly what it is, how it works, who benefits, and how to calculate whether the economics make sense for your business. If you want the product rather than the theory, see our dynamic discounting software page or run your own numbers in the dynamic discounting calculator.

The Problem Dynamic Discounting Solves

Most B2B payment terms are 30, 60, or 90 days. This creates a predictable tension:

  • Supplier:I've delivered the goods. I need cash to cover payroll and materials now, not in 60 days.
  • Buyer:I have the cash, but the invoice isn't due for 60 days. My treasury account earns almost nothing.

Dynamic discounting closes this gap. The supplier says: “If you pay today, I'll accept $9,800 instead of $10,000.” The buyer gets a 2% return without risk on a 60-day payment they were going to make anyway. The supplier gets cash 59 days early.

How It Works — Step by Step

  1. 1

    Supplier creates an offer

The supplier uploads an invoice and sets a discount rate and expiry window — e.g. 2% discount if payment is received within 10 days.

  2. 2

    Buyer reviews and accepts

The buyer receives an email notification with the full terms. They can accept with a single click, decline, or counter-offer.

  3. 3

    Payment is made directly

The buyer transmits the discounted amount directly to the supplier via their existing bank transfer or wire. No intermediary holds funds.

  4. 4

    Confirmation is generated

Both parties receive an e-signed PDF confirmation with the full terms, accepted amount, IP address, timestamp, and payment due date.

How to Calculate the Est. Annual % — The Maths

The annualised return on a dynamic discount — expressed as an Est. Annual % — is:

Est. Annual % =

(Discount % ÷ Days accelerated) × 365

For example:

  • • 2% discount, paid 27 days early: (0.02 ÷ 27) × 365 = 27.0% annualized
  • • 1.5% discount, paid 20 days early: (0.015 ÷ 20) × 365 = 27.4% annualized
  • • 1% discount, paid 14 days early: (0.01 ÷ 14) × 365 = 26.1% annualized

Discount Flow's calculator subtracts 2 days from the term to allow for the 48 hours the buyer has to initiate payment after acceptance, so its Est. Annual % runs slightly higher than the figures above.

These returns carry no risk from the buyer's perspective — the payment was already approved and the funds allocated. The buyer is simply choosing to deploy them 27 days earlier in exchange for a 2% reduction in the amount paid.

Who Benefits from Dynamic Discounting?

Suppliers

Unlock working capital tied up in unpaid invoices without taking on debt, paying factoring fees, or involving a bank. On Discount Flow, dynamic discounting is covered by the No Cost Enterprise Plan for suppliers — no platform fees, no transaction costs.

Buyers

Deploy idle treasury cash on invoices you already owe: pay early for a discount, which is a return without risk of up to 24%+ Est. Annual % — far above any money market or treasury account. Simultaneously strengthen supplier relationships and reduce supply chain disruption risk.

How to Get Started

Dynamic discounting works best for companies with established buyer-supplier relationships and payment terms of 30 days or more. The simplest way to start is:

  1. 1. Register for the No Cost Enterprise Plan on Discount Flow (2 minutes)
  2. 2. Upload your first invoice and set a discount rate
  3. 3. Send the offer to your buyer — they can accept without registering
  4. 4. Receive payment within 48 hours of acceptance

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula for calculating the Est. Annual % of a dynamic discount?

The Est. Annual % of a dynamic discount is calculated as: (Discount % ÷ Days accelerated) × 365. For example, a 2% discount on a payment made 30 days early = (0.02 ÷ 30) × 365 ≈ 24% annualized.

Who initiates a dynamic discount offer?

In most dynamic discounting programmes, the supplier initiates the offer — they upload an invoice and propose a discount rate and time window. The buyer then accepts or declines. Some platforms (including reverse factoring arrangements) allow buyers to initiate, but supplier-led is more common for mid-market.

What is dynamic discounting software?

Dynamic discounting software lets a supplier and a buyer agree, document and track an early-payment discount on an approved invoice. Discount Flow is software, not a lender or a marketplace: the buyer pays the supplier directly and both parties receive a Confirmation Receipt.

How is dynamic discounting different from supply chain finance?

Supply chain finance usually involves a bank or funder paying the supplier early and the buyer repaying the funder later. Dynamic discounting uses the buyer's own cash and a discount the two parties agree, so no third-party funder is involved.
